2025-05-09Intel is working on its next-generation lithography to achieve autonomy in chip development and attract customers. According to the Korean site ChosunBiz, the Blue Team is discussing with NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Google to become their primary chip provider for the next generation.

Rumor has it that the interest from potential customers emerged after the CEO change, specifically after Pat Gelsinger’s departure in December and Lip-Bu Tan’s arrival in March. The new leader has new strategies for the Intel Foundry.
Another possible reason NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Google are seeking Intel’s 18A process is that TSMC always operates to meet high demand from its various clients. Note that we’re talking about the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer. Moreover, there are worries about the Trump administration’s policies and Taiwan’s “Silicon Shield.”
Expectations with Intel 18A
The Blue Team’s new lithography is expected to compete head-on with Taiwan’s N2 process. The mobile processors Panther Lake will be the first made with 18A and are scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2026, after a delay, as the initial promise was.

At the beginning of the year, Intel said the lithography was advancing well, and notebook processors were already in testing. At the time, the company also said it would deliver low SRAM density with this lithography, something at the level TSMC promises to deliver with its new 2 nm process.
This phase with the 18A lithography is especially crucial for Intel for various reasons. The first is to have greater autonomy and depend less on TSMC. Moreover, it’s a move to ensure the Foundry division sustains a significant portion of the demand from US companies, mainly now with the commercial war between the US and China.
