The Starship rocket, developed by SpaceX, exploded during its latest flight test due to an anomaly in the upper stage. According to the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk, the Starship’s platform presented a bright flash, indicating problems in its Raptor engines. This is what SpaceX concluded after investigating the outcome of the 8th flight test, conducted in March
On that day, the system formed by the Starship rocket and the Super Heavy booster was launched from Starbase in Texas. The booster returned to land on the launch tower, and the Starship exploded over the Atlantic Ocean less than 10 minutes after the mission began. The incident was recorded by observers, who published videos of the rocket’s debris on social media.

According to a company statement on its website, this was due to an anomaly in the upper stage, which houses its six Raptor engines. The flash was observed near one of the engines at the center of the Starship and led to what SpaceX described as an energetic event, which caused the vehicle to malfunction and crash.
The remaining engines lost thrust, causing the vehicle to lose control and fall. The SpaceX lost contact with the Starship minutes after the first flash, which triggered the flight termination software and the subsequent self-destruction of the rocket.
“The most likely root cause for the loss of the Starship was identified as a hardware failure of the central Raptor engines of the upper stage, which resulted in inadvertent mixture and ignition of propellant,” explained SpaceX. For the next flight, SpaceX adjusted some of the critical structures of the upper stage and applied improvements to avoid flammable gases entering combustion outside the desired moment.
The SpaceX announced the date of the 9th flight test on the same day it announced the findings about the outcome of the 8th flight test. The next mission is scheduled to be launched on Tuesday (27) at 8:30 PM Brasilia time, with transmission available on the company’s website and its profile on X, formerly Twitter.
