2025-02-07Intel Reports Significant Decline in Server Processor Sales
The latest fiscal report from Intel reveals a significant decline in sales of Xeon server processors, with a 13-year low in shipments. This downward trend started in 2022 and continued into 2024, with the company shipping less than one million units last year.
In comparison to 2020, when Intel reached its peak in Xeon processor sales, the company saw a significant drop in shipments, with only about half of the 1.7 million units sold in 2020.
During a meeting where Intel presented these results, interim CEO Michelle Johnston acknowledged that the company is lagging behind its rival AMD in the data center market with its EPYC processors:
“I think it wouldn’t be unreasonable to put a data center product outside if it meant I got the right product, the right market window, and the right performance for my customers.”
Meanwhile, AMD is experiencing significant growth in the same server processor market with its EPYC solutions. The company’s latest fiscal report shows that sales of its 4th-generation EPYC processors grew by double digits. This product has attracted major customers such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and more.
This marks a significant shift in the market, as Intel has historically dominated the processor market for both PCs and servers. AMD is now gaining ground in both markets with its Ryzen and EPYC processors.
